It's hard to believe we're nearing the end of a two-year adventure, but what an adventure it's been! The EPIC Numeracy Alliance has been a labor of love, a professional learning model built on the belief that when teachers grow, students thrive. As we look back on everything we've accomplished together, we're filled with gratitude, pride, and a whole lot of excitement for what's still to come.
What is the EPIC Numeracy Alliance?
The EPIC Numeracy Alliance is a Kentucky Numeracy Counts Academy funded by HB 162, a two-year professional learning experience designed for teachers and leaders in grades 3–8. Whether working with our Intermediate (3–5) or Middle Grades (6–8) cohorts, the goal has always been the same: deepen mathematical understanding, strengthen classroom instruction, and build a genuine sense of shared responsibility for every student's success.
What did we learn together?
So much. Seriously, so much. Here are just a few of the highlights from our two years of learning:
Mathematical Practice Standards - We dug into the Standards for Mathematical Practice and explored how they show up, or could show up, in our classrooms, our curricular materials, and our standards. This wasn't just theory; it was about making these practices feel real and relevant in everyday teaching.
Rigor in tasks - We analyzed mathematical tasks through the lens of cognitive rigor, and when tasks didn't measure up, we rolled up our sleeves and adapted them, because our students deserve tasks that challenge and stretch them.
Multiple models and representations - We deepened our own conceptual understanding of mathematical principles by exploring a wide range of representations. It turns out that when teachers truly understand math in multiple ways, that understanding is contagious in the best possible way.
The power of student discourse - Perhaps one of our most energizing discoveries: the incredible value of letting students talk about their mathematical thinking. When students explain, argue, and reason out loud, something special happens. We learned to create space for those conversations and to listen to what students are telling us about their understanding.
We went to where teachers are
One of the things we're most proud of? We didn't just talk about math instruction in a conference room, we traveled all over the state of Kentucky to meet teachers right where they are, in their schools, having real conversations about what math teaching looks like in their classrooms. Those visits reminded us constantly why this work matters so much.
And when we weren't visiting in person, the Patterns platform kept us connected. We were genuine thought partners for one another by asking questions, sharing ideas, and pushing each other's thinking in the best of ways.
A heartfelt thank you
None of this happens without investment, and we don't take that lightly. To every administrator and teacher who poured their time, energy, and commitment into this work: thank you. Improving math instruction is not a small undertaking, and the dedication we've witnessed across this cohort has been truly humbling and inspiring.
What's next
We are thrilled to share that we'll be launching a brand new cohort in the fall of 2026! We can't wait to continue building strong, lasting relationships with a new group of dedicated educators, and to keep doing the kind of work that makes a real difference for students across Kentucky.
