Description

Meaningful mathematical discourse doesn’t happen by chance; it requires intentional structures that help every student make sense of mathematics, develop their ideas, and communicate their thinking. In this interactive professional learning experience, educators will explore the what and why of Math Language Routines (MLRs) and experience five routines designed to strengthen student sense-making, mathematical language, and discourse: Collect and Display, Three Reads, Stronger and Clearer Each Time, Critique, Correct, and Clarify, and Discussion Supports.

Participants will engage in the routines as learners, unpack the intentional teacher moves that make them effective, and identify opportunities to leverage MLRs within their HQIR to increase access and meaningful participation for all students. Participants will leave with practical routines and strategies they can immediately use to get students thinking, talking, refining, and communicating their mathematical ideas.

Topics

  • The What and Why of MLRs
  • MLR 2: Collect and Display
  • MLR 6: Three Reads
  • MLR 1: Stronger and Clearer Each Time
  • MLR 3: Critique, Correct, and Clarify
  • MLR 8: Discussion Supports

This is Session 1 of a two-part series. If you wish to attend both sessions, you will need to register for each separately. You do not have to attend Session 1 to register for Session 2.

Learning Targets
  • Develop a shared understanding of the purpose and design of Math Language Routines and how they create access to rigorous mathematics while strengthening students’ mathematical language, reasoning, and discourse.
  • Experience and unpack MLRs that support students in making sense of mathematics and communicating their thinking through Collect and Display, Three Reads, Stronger and Clearer Each Time, Critique, Correct, and Clarify, and Discussion Supports.
  • Identify intentional opportunities to leverage Math Language Routines within HQIR lessons to strengthen student sense-making, refine mathematical language, and increase meaningful participation in mathematical discourse.
